Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has set its sights on cutting $1 trillion in government spending and restructuring federal agencies through mass workforce reductions. While some of his targets—such as USAID and the Department of Education—have stirred controversy, his efforts have already exposed a staggering amount of taxpayer waste that had previously gone unchecked.
Among the more absurd expenditures, USAID allocated over $1.5 million to promote workplace diversity and equity programs in Serbia, a country with no significant ties to U.S. economic or social interests. Another $70,000 was spent funding a DEI-themed musical in Ireland. The agency also directed $47,000 toward a transgender opera in Colombia and $32,000 for a transgender comic book in Peru. Even more questionable, USAID funneled over $2 million into financing gender reassignment surgeries and LGBT activism in Guatemala—hardly a priority for American taxpayers.
These examples barely scratch the surface of the unnecessary and ideologically driven projects funded by U.S. tax dollars. Musk’s critics argue that his approach is too aggressive, but when government spending reaches this level of recklessness, decisive action is necessary. We’ll continue to monitor DOGE’s next moves, but so far, it looks like Musk is doing exactly what needs to be done—cutting through waste and restoring accountability where it’s long been lacking.
